Mainstreaming Disability in Women’s Organizations

This DIWA project succeeded in Mainstreaming Disability within the Women’s & Aids Support Network and the Zimbabwe Women’s Resource centre. It was funded by the UNWOMEN Gender Support Programme in Zimbabwe. The rationale was that disabled women are vastly under-represented in women’s networks programmes where they should make at least 10% of participants if properly represented. The under-representation of disabled women is caused by a wide range of environmental and attitudinal barriers. The effect of it is that disabled women’s needs are very often not considered at all although the Mainstream Women’s Movement provides a lot of opportunities and services Disabled Women could profit of if disability had been mainstreamed
