Ugandan Ministry is Mainstreaming Disability
DIWA congratulates the National Union of Women with Disabilities in Uganda (NUWODU) for successfully lobbying Government on disability mainstreaming. The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development committed itself to mainstream disability in their work-plan and include the progress in the state report to the CEDAW Committee in 2013.
NUWODU had lobbied for the inclusion of the girl child with a disability in primary and secondary schools, for adequate special needs teachers in schools, sign language interpreters, and the inclusion of girls with disabilities in sex education programmes of schools.
Representatives of the National Union of Women with Disabilities participated in a DIWA Capacity Development Programme on how to Lobby for Disability Mainstreaming.
