Disabled Women in Africa (DIWA) is the independent women's wing of the Pan-African Federation of the Disabled (PAFOD), the umbrella of the Disabled People's Organisations in Africa.
What we are doing

DIWA is a young organization and still waiting for funds to start programmes. But nevertheless DIWA already started to lobby for the inclusion of women and for Gender Mainstreaming Policies within Disabled People's Organizations.

DIWA Objectives

The overall objective of DIWA is to empower Women with disabilities to lobby for the rights and to enhance their visibility, i.e.:
  • to spearhead inclusion
  • to mainstream gender policies
  • to develop networking
  • to build up Disabled Women's structures
  • to promote unity of purpose
  • to mainstream disability policies

DIWA's History

DIWA was founded in Dar-es-Salaam in 2002 as an independent women's wing of the Pan-African Federation of the Disabled (PAFOD).
But due to a lack of support DIWA remained stagnant for some years. Then in 2005 the Southern Africa Federation of the Disabled (SAFOD) resolved to support the further development of DIWA.
